Additional information

The Institut d'Émission d'Outre-Mer was established in 1966 to manage currency across France's Pacific territories — New Caledonia, French Polynesia, and Wallis and Futuna — replacing the role previously held by the Banque de l'Indochine after decolonization made that arrangement politically untenable. These small-denomination pieces circulated across genuinely remote island economies where coin loss rates were high and replacement cycles slow, which partly explains why lower-denomination IEOM issues from the 1970s are harder to find in problem-free condition than mintage figures alone would suggest.
