Comments

Fort du Murier was one of several French prisoner-of-war camps that issued internal scrip during the First World War to allow detainees to purchase goods without handling official French currency — a practice sanctioned under the Geneva Convention framework governing POW camp administration. These camp emissions are among the most ephemeral monetary objects of the war: produced in tiny quantities, used within a single facility, and rarely preserved by men who had no particular reason to save them.

Grey paper stock was typical of wartime material shortages rather than a deliberate design choice.
