Obverse description Draped bust of Marianne facing left, wearing a winged Phrygian cap, after the design by Louis Bazor. Four sailing ships appear in the background field. The legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE UNION FRANÇAISE encircles the effigy, with the engraver's signature L.BAZOR and the initials GB appearing near the truncation. The word ESSAI and the date 1948 appear below the bust.
