Béthune sits in the Pas-de-Calais, deep inside the zone that became the Western Front's industrial hinterland almost immediately after August 1914. With the Banque de France's branch network disrupted and small change effectively vanishing from circulation, local chambers of commerce across northern France were authorized to issue emergency nécessité notes. Béthune's chamber was among the earliest to act.
The JP#26 series spans five catalogue numbers, reflecting reissues across the war years rather than distinct design changes — a common source of confusion when attributing individual examples to a specific emission date.
