Korçë — or Koritza, as the French called it — was administered by France between 1916 and 1920 under a short-lived autonomous protectorate arrangement carved out during the First World War. This note is a product of that administrative gap: with no functioning Albanian state currency and the French military presence withdrawing, the local municipality issued its own emergency paper to keep commerce moving.
The denomination in francs rather than any Albanian unit reflects how completely French administrative logic had embedded itself in the town's daily life. Albanian notgeld is an extremely narrow collecting category — Korçë municipality issues represent virtually all of it.
