Algeria's wartime small-denomination notes were produced locally out of necessity — metropolitan France was occupied and normal supply chains for printed currency had collapsed. Jules Carbonel's Algiers press, primarily a commercial and government printer, stepped in to produce multiple low-value denominations for the Economic Region, an administrative body standing in for absent banking infrastructure.
The 2 Francs of this series is among the smallest-value pieces and saw hard use, which means genuinely uncirculated examples are difficult to locate. Paper quality from Carbonel's wartime runs was inconsistent, and the notes are prone to edge wear and toning.
