Réunion's wartime currency situation was genuinely complicated. After France's armistice with Germany in 1940, the island initially remained under Vichy authority before rallying to the Free French in November 1942 — the same year this note was issued. Low-denomination paper fractionals like this 2 Francs filled a practical gap as metal coinage disappeared from circulation, hoarded or simply unavailable.
Imp. Chaix was a Paris commercial printer better known for railway timetables and posters than banknotes. That the Banque de la Réunion used them at all reflects the disruptions of wartime procurement rather than any deliberate choice.
