| Obverse description | Stylized royal crown depicted in relief, rendered in a simplified Indo-French hammered style. The crown features a beaded band across the lower register, above which rises a curved arc adorned with a row of pellets. Three floral or star-shaped ornaments emerge from the crown's upper portion, consistent with the artistic conventions of French colonial coinage struck for Pondicherry. The overall design occupies the full field of the irregularly shaped flan. |

The Compagnie des Indes held its concession over Pondichéry through a period of repeated military interruption — the British seized and razed the city in 1761, and French coinage authority there was effectively suspended until the territory was restored by the Treaty of Paris in 1763. The fanon was a regional unit of account adapted from local Tamil monetary custom, not imposed wholesale from Paris.
