Slovenia proposed World Bee Day to the United Nations in 2016, driven by the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association and the fact that Anton Janša — an 18th-century Slovenian widely regarded as the founder of modern apiculture — was born on May 20th. The UN formally adopted the resolution in December 2017, with the first official World Bee Day observed on May 20, 2018, the same year this coin was issued.
The commemorative predates most public awareness of the designation by several years.
