Issued to mark the 300th anniversary of the Nueva Planta decrees, by which Philip V dissolved the traditional laws and institutions of Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, and Majorca following the War of the Spanish Succession. The decrees imposed Castilian administrative law across the Crown of Aragon — a centralization that remains politically charged in Spain to this day, particularly in Catalonia.
The timing of this coin's release, during peak tension over Catalan independence, was not lost on observers.
