| Obverse description | The obverse depicts a stylized rendering of the Treaty of Rome document superimposed upon a geometric paving pattern evoking Michelangelo's design for the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, the site of the treaty's signing on 25 March 1957. The legend TRAITÉ DE ROME 50 ANS arcs across the upper field, with EUROPE and the date 2007 inscribed below, and RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE completing the outer legend. This common commemorative design, selected through a competition organized by the European mints, was adopted by all eurozone member states to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the treaty that established the European Economic Community. The coin's outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union. The engraver's initials appear in the field. |
