Obverse description The brass centre features a right-facing draped bust of Jean Parisot de la Valette, Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, rendered in high relief with fine portrait detail including a bearded visage and armoured shoulders. The date 2004 appears in the field below the portrait, with the engraver's initials VL. and the mint mark G also present. The legend JEAN PARISOT DE LA VALETTE arcs above the portrait within the brass centre. The copper-nickel outer ring bears the multilingual trial inscription PRUEBA TRIAL ESSAI PROBE distributed around the periphery, interspersed with Maltese cross devices, with MALTA inscribed at the base of the ring.
