Issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the Virgin of Montserrat's designation as patron saint of Catalonia, a title formally granted by Pope Pius XII in 1950. The abbey itself, perched on the distinctive rock formations above the Llobregat valley, has been a pilgrimage destination since at least the 11th century and survived partial destruction during the Napoleonic occupation of 1811–1812.
