Obverse description The bimetallic inner disc features a right-facing portrait bust of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato in profile, rendered in a classical style. To the left of the effigy, the commemorative legend in ancient Greek lettering records 2,400 years since the founding of Plato's Academy, along with the issuing authority 'Hellenic Republic.' To the right, the date '2013' and the mint monogram of the Greek Mint appear in the field. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union.
