Cáceres was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986, one of the earliest Spanish cities to receive the designation. The old city contains one of the most intact medieval and Renaissance urban cores in Europe, largely because it escaped significant industrial development and wartime destruction — a rare combination for a settlement of its age and size. Spain's commemorative €2 program has systematically rotated through its UNESCO sites since 2010 under the "España" series.
