| Reverse description | The standard European Union reverse design features a geographic outline map of Western Europe spanning both the inner core and outer ring on the right side. The denomination '2 EURO' is superimposed over the map, with the numeral '2' prominently set in the open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Malta's inclusion of Copernicus in its commemorative program is an oddity worth noting — the astronomer had no particular connection to the island, and the coin is instead part of a broader European series issued across multiple member states marking figures of shared continental significance. Poland issued its own Copernicus commemorative in the same series, given his birth in Royal Prussia and his decades at Frombork Cathedral where the heliocentric model was developed and quietly shelved for years before publication.
The De revolutionibus orbium coelestium reportedly reached Copernicus on his deathbed in 1543.
