Obverse description The inner disc of the obverse features a six-pointed star formed by two overlapping triangles, symbolising the union of the seven Ionian Islands with Greece. Within each of the six points of the star, a distinctive emblem representing one of the Ionian Islands is depicted in relief, including a galley, a lyre, a key, an amphora, a flag, and a classical female figure. The central field bears a multi-line Greek inscription recording the 150th anniversary of the union, flanked by the date range 1864–2014, with the issuing authority legend ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ (Hellenic Republic) below. The outer copper-nickel ring carries the twelve stars of the European Union in high relief.
