The Pharaoh Hound — known locally as il-Kelb tal-Fenek, literally "the rabbit dog" — holds the distinction of being one of Malta's two national animals and has appeared on Maltese coinage since the lira era. Despite its name and the longstanding claim that it descends directly from ancient Egyptian dogs depicted in tomb paintings, genetic studies published in the early 2000s largely debunked that lineage; the breed almost certainly developed independently on the Maltese islands.
