Issued to mark the centenary of Grand Duchess Charlotte's accession in 1919, this coin commemorates the ruler who kept the Luxembourg crown legitimate through two German occupations. Charlotte abdicated in 1964 in favor of her son Jean — one of the earliest voluntary abdications in modern European royal history — but her wartime BBC radio broadcasts from exile had already secured her near-mythic status among Luxembourgers. The coin's subject, Henri I, refers to the reigning Grand Duke at time of issue, whose portrait appears on the standard Luxembourg circulation coinage of the same period.
