Obverse description The central field depicts the Ġgantija megalithic temple complex of Gozo, one of the world's oldest free-standing structures, constructed approximately in the 36th century BC, predating both Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids. The legend 'ĠGANTIJA TEMPLES' appears in the upper right, with the date range '3600-3200 BC' inscribed beneath it. The country name 'MALTA' is inscribed in the lower left, with the year of issue '2016' below, flanked by the mint master mark and mintmark. The engraver's initials 'NGB' are present in the field. The outer ring of the bimetallic coin bears the twelve stars of the European Union.
