| Obverse description | The inner disc features a composite design commemorating the 500th anniversary of the death of Raffaello Sanzio. To the left, a portrait of the Renaissance master is depicted in left-facing profile, rendered in a painterly style evoking his own self-portrait tradition. To the right, a detail of the two celebrated putti (cherubs) from his Sistine Madonna is reproduced in high relief, the winged figures resting with their chins on their hands in a pensive attitude. The commemorative dates 1520 and 2020 are inscribed centrally above the putti, while the legend RAFFAELLO SANZIO arcs along the upper portion of the inner disc. The inscription CITTÀ DEL VATICANO appears in two lines below the putti, and the engravers' signatures D. LONGO and SP INC. are present in the lower field. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union. |
