The Festival of the Fédération commemorates the July 14, 1790 celebration held on the Champ de Mars — exactly one year after the Bastille fell — where an estimated 300,000 people gathered to swear a civic oath of national unity. It was less a spontaneous jubilation than a carefully staged political event, organized by Lafayette and the National Assembly to project the image of a unified France at a moment when the revolution was still deeply contested. The color application on this issue was added by a private operator post-mint, making it technically an aftermarket piece rather than an official Monnaie de Paris colored strike.
