The Exodus of Messolonghi — April 1826 — was the failed breakout attempt by the besieged Greek revolutionary garrison after nearly a year under Ottoman blockade. Of the several thousand who attempted to flee, most were killed or captured; the event galvanized European philhellenic sentiment and accelerated foreign intervention on Greece's behalf. This coin marks two centuries since that night.
