| Obverse description | The inner disc features a contemporary design commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus Programme. A portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam, after one of his most celebrated depictions, occupies the left portion of the field. Emanating from the portrait, a network of interlinking beams extends across the coin surface, representing the intellectual and human exchanges fostered among European students; select links form star motifs symbolising inter-country synergy. The numeral '35' emerges prominently from the star pattern in a modern graphic style, accompanied by the dates '1987–2022' and the inscriptions 'ERASMUS PROGRAMME' and 'MALTA', with the engraver's initials 'J.J.' also present. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union flag. |

| Reverse description | The standard European Union common reverse, designed by Luc Luycx, depicts a geographical map of Western Europe spanning both the inner disc and outer ring on the right side of the coin.
