Obverse description The inner disc depicts the statue of Hibernia as she stands atop the General Post Office, the symbolic focal point of the 1916 Easter Rising; the figure is flanked in the field by the dates '1916' and '2016', commemorating the centenary of the event. Radiating sunrays behind the effigy evoke the dawning of the Irish Republic as proclaimed in 1916. The legend 'HIBERNIA' arcs across the upper portion of the inner circle, rendered in hand-lettered script drawing on the tradition of the Book of Kells. The country name 'éire' and the year of issue '2016' appear at the base of the inner circle, while the outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union.
