Issued to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Dominikos Theotokopoulos — better known as El Greco — this coin reflects a long-standing tension in how Greece and Spain each claim him. Born in Crete in 1541, he trained in Venice under Titian's influence before settling permanently in Toledo, where he spent the last four decades of his life. Spain considers him foundational to its artistic heritage; Greece insists on the Cretan.
The anniversary year of 2014 also saw major retrospective exhibitions in both countries, making this one of the more culturally contested commemorative issues in the euro series.
