Not a legal tender coin. This is a military token — a so-called "monnaie de Paris" regimental piece issued by the 2ème Régiment du Génie, an engineering regiment garrisoned at Metz with roots in the French Army's long tradition of combat engineering dating to Vauban's 17th-century fortification corps. Regiments of this type commissioned these bimetallic pieces privately, often timed to unit anniversaries or the euro changeover in January 2002, for sale within the mess or as unit memorabilia.
