Aubenas is one of several hundred French municipalities that issued local currency vouchers ("euros de ville") in the run-up to EMU adoption — a largely promotional phenomenon that peaked between 1996 and 1998. These pieces were sold to collectors and tourists, with issuing towns keeping the face-value proceeds. Actual circulation was minimal to nonexistent.
No legal tender status was ever conferred.
