| Obverse description | The inner disc features a right-facing portrait effigy of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (Carolus V), rendered in a Renaissance medallic style, accompanied by the legend CAROLUS V at right. To the left of the portrait appears a representation of the historic Golden Carolus Guilder, a celebrated coin introduced under Charles V's monetary reforms. The country code BE and the year of issue 2021 are inscribed in the left field. The designer's initials LL, for Luc Luycx, appear in the lower field alongside the Utrecht mintmark (a caduceus staff) and the Belgian mint director's privy mark, the coat of arms of the municipality of Herzele. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union flag. |
