Obverse description The central field of the inner disc depicts a full frontal view of Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom), rendered in fine relief to highlight the soaring twin spires and intricate Gothic tracery of the south portal façade, exemplifying High Gothic ecclesiastical architecture. The state inscription NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN arcs along the lower portion of the inner disc, directly beneath the cathedral motif, identifying both the depicted monument and the issuing German federal state. The mint mark appears in the upper right area of the inner disc, while the designer's initials HH (Heinz Hoyer) are incused in the central right field. The outer ring, common to all German euro coins, bears the twelve stars of the European Union arranged around the circumference, with the country initial D at the top and the split date 20·11 at the bottom of the ring.

Additional information

North Rhine-Westphalia's entry in the Bundesländer commemorative series depicts the Cologne Cathedral, which took over 600 years to complete — construction halted in 1473 and did not resume until 1842, when the original medieval plans were rediscovered in Paris. The five German mints divided production across their facilities, each distinguished by its mint mark: A, D, F, G, or J.

Germany's most populous state by a significant margin, NRW was itself a postwar creation, assembled by British occupation authorities in 1946 from the former Prussian provinces of Westphalia and the Rhine.
