Additional information

The Jardim Botânico da Ajuda, established in 1768 under the Marquis of Pombal's directive to modernize Portuguese scientific education, is the oldest botanical garden on the Iberian Peninsula. It was laid out by the Italian botanist Domenico Vandelli, who also founded the natural history museum at the University of Coimbra. The garden survived the catastrophic 1755 Lisbon earthquake only because it was created afterward — though the adjacent Ajuda Palace, begun in 1796, was never completed, leaving the garden permanently overshadowed by an unfinished royal residence.
