Obverse description The inner disc depicts a Pontifical Swiss Guard in full traditional uniform, bearing the Papal flag and taking the oath of loyalty to the Pope, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Corps. The legend GUARDIA SVIZZERA PONTIFICIA arcs along the upper periphery of the inner disc, while CITTÀ DEL VATICANO appears in the lower field beneath the flag. The founding year 1506 is inscribed to the left of the figure, with the engraver's signature O. ROSSI positioned below it along the flagpole; the issue year 2006 and the Rome Mint mark R appear to the right. The twelve stars of the European Union are arranged on the outer bimetallic ring.
