Obverse description The obverse depicts a stylized rendering of the Treaty of Rome document superimposed on a radial paving pattern evoking Michelangelo's design for the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, the site of the treaty's signing on 25 March 1957. The legend VERDRAG VAN ROME 50 JAAR arcs across the upper field, with EUROPA and the date 2007 incorporated into the design, and KONINKRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN appearing in the lower portion. This common commemorative design was issued jointly by all euro area member states to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the treaty that established the European Economic Community. The outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European Union evenly spaced around the circumference.
