Obverse description The inner disc features a left-facing profile effigy of Lucien I Grimaldi, founder of Monégasque sovereignty. An arched legend within the inner disc reads '1512 SOUVERAINETE DE MONACO 2012', commemorating the 500th anniversary of Monaco's sovereignty, flanked by two ornamental lozenge devices. At the lower left of the portrait, the cornucopia mintmark of the Monnaie de Paris appears alongside the engraver's fleurette hallmark at the lower right; the name 'LUCIEN Ier' is inscribed above the mintmark. The coin's outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European Union in relief.
