Obverse description The obverse features a left-facing effigy of King Albert II of Belgium, depicted wearing spectacles, engraved in a contemporary portrait style by Jan Alfons Keustermans. To the right of the portrait appears the royal monogram 'A' surmounted by a crown, with the country abbreviation 'BE' below. The mint year appears in the lower field, flanked by the mintmaster's and engraver's privy marks. The outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European Union in relief against the coin's copper-nickel ground.
