Additional information

Greece's 2026 commemorative marks the centenary of the Academy of Athens, founded in 1926 as the country's national academy of sciences, letters, and fine arts — delayed by nearly a century from the ambitions of Kapodistrias, who had proposed such an institution in the 1820s immediately following independence. The building itself, designed by Theophil Hansen and completed in 1885, was privately funded by the Greek-Austrian banker Simon Sinas.

Hansen's Academy forms one third of the so-called "Athenian Trilogy" alongside the National Library and the University, all built in succession along Panepistimiou Street.
