Portugal issued this coin in 2019 to mark the 500th anniversary of the Magellan-Elcano expedition's departure from Seville in 1519 — not its completion, which fell in 1522 when Elcano brought the Victoria home with just 18 survivors from an original crew of roughly 270. Magellan himself died in the Philippines in April 1521, killed at the Battle of Mactan, meaning the commander who lent the voyage its name never finished it.
Spain issued a competing commemorative for the same anniversary, a diplomatic awkwardness given that the expedition sailed under Castilian commission despite Magellan's Portuguese birth.
