| Obverse description | The inner disc features a stylised euro sign at centre, rendered as a globe to symbolise the currency's global significance, surrounded by a series of allegorical vignettes: a family group representing ordinary citizens, the Eurotower symbolising the financial world, a merchant vessel representing trade, a factory denoting industry, and two wind turbines alluding to energy and research. The designer's initials 'A.H.' appear discreetly between the ship and the Eurotower in the field. The upper arc of the inner disc bears the legend 'ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ' (Hellenic Republic) in Greek script, while the lower arc displays the commemorative years '2002–2012'. The outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European Union in relief. |
