Issued to mark the eighth centenary of the Canticle of the Creatures, the hymn Francis of Assisi composed in Umbrian vernacular around 1224 — one of the earliest surviving texts written in Italian rather than Latin. The Vatican and the Italian Republic rarely align on commemorative subjects, but Francis occupies ground both claim: he is simultaneously a figure of Catholic devotion and a symbol of Italian cultural patrimony deep enough to avoid controversy.
The coin had not yet entered circulation at time of cataloging.
