The Saarland 2 Euro is part of Germany's long-running federal states series, each of the sixteen Bundesländer issued in sequence beginning in 2006. Saarland's turn came in 2009 — an appropriate fit given the territory's complicated twentieth-century history: occupied, administered as a semi-autonomous protectorate under French economic control from 1947, and only formally reunified with West Germany in January 1957 after a 1955 referendum rejected continued separation.
The ruthenium plating on this piece is a private aftermarket application, not an official Bundesbank issue. Ruthenium, one of the rarest platinum-group metals, is applied primarily for its blue-grey aesthetic contrast.
