Obverse description Draped bust of Jean Parisot de la Valette facing slightly right, occupying the central field. The legend JEAN PARISOT DE LA VALETTE arcs above the portrait, with the date 2004 to the left and the engraver's initials VL. below. The inscription PRUEBA TRIAL ESSAI PROBE is distributed around the outer rim, interspersed with Maltese cross ornaments. The word MALTA appears in the lower exergue. Engraved by Vera Ludwig.

Reverse description The large numeral 2 dominates the right portion of the field, rendered in a bold serif style against a background of diagonal lines. To the left, the European Union flag — depicted as a waving banner bearing a circle of twelve stars — stands prominently in the field. A rectangular cartouche bearing the word SPECIMEN is positioned at the base of the numeral. The overall design follows the standard Euro cent reverse layout adapted for specimen and trial purposes.
