| Obverse description | The obverse features the coat of arms of Cardinal Chamberlain Eduardo Martínez Somalo, superimposed upon the emblem of the Apostolic Chamber, centrally positioned in the field. Surrounding the heraldic design is the legend SEDE VACANTE, indicating the interregnum period following the death of Pope John Paul II, flanked by the date rendered in Roman numerals MMV. The outer legend reads CITTÀ DEL VATICANO, and twelve stars of the European Union encircle the composition. Engravers' signatures D.
