Reverse description The large numeral '2' dominates the left portion of the field, rendered in the standard euro cent typographic style with diagonal line engraving in the background. To the right, a symbolic balance of justice (scales) is depicted in relief, with radiating lines extending behind it. A ring of twelve five-pointed stars lines the lower and right periphery of the coin. The multilingual trial legend 'PROBE TRIAL ESSAI PRUEBA' arcs along the upper rim in Latin capitals, identifying this piece as a fantasy trial strike.

Additional information

Latvia didn't adopt the Euro until 2014, but probe coins — issued under the French "essai" tradition — were struck in 2004 when EU accession first opened the door to eventual Eurozone membership. These pieces were never legal tender and never circulated; they exist solely as collector artifacts from the preparatory phase, produced to test designs and gauge market interest a full decade before Latvian lats gave way to the single currency.
