Philippe succeeded Albert II following the latter's abdication in July 2013 — the first Belgian abdication since Leopold III stepped down in 1951. Coins bearing his effigy entered circulation in 2014, making this the third distinct royal portrait to appear on Belgian euro cents within the currency's first fifteen years.
