Beatrix abdicated on April 30, 2013 — Dutch Liberation Day, a date she chose deliberately — ending a reign of 33 years. That abdication closed this coin type, with Willem-Alexander's effigy replacing hers on all euro cent denominations the same year. The Dutch were the only eurozone nation to complete a full monarchical transition during the euro's first decade and a half of circulation.
