The left profile portrait of King Albert II (modified from the one on the 1999-2007 coins) is surrounded by the twelve stars of the Union, between two of which are the letters BE for `Belgium` and the royal monogram: an A with the numeral II underneath, topped by a crown. This new national side was created to comply with the new recommendations of the European Central Bank.
