Malta adopted the euro on January 1, 2008, following a conversion rate of 0.4293 Maltese liri to one euro — a rate locked in 2007 after the European Central Bank confirmed Malta had met the Maastricht criteria. Specimen strikes were produced for collector sets, not circulation, and differ from business strikes in their polished dies and carefully prepared planchets.
