Additional information

Germany's federal commemorative 2 Euro program rotates through the sixteen Länder in a fixed cycle, with Brandenburg appearing in 2020. The ruthenium plating on this piece is a modern collector variant — not a circulating issue — produced by private refiners applying the platinum-group metal over the standard bimetallic blank. Ruthenium, atomic number 44, was isolated by Karl Klaus in Kazan in 1844 and named for Ruthenia, the Latin designation for Russia.
