| Additional information |
Berck-sur-Mer issued this piece as a local "euro de ville" — one of thousands of municipal fantasy coins struck across France in 1997–1998 as promotional currency ahead of the single European currency's 1999 launch. These issues had no legal tender status and were produced commercially for circulation among tourists and collectors, with individual towns contracting private mints to produce them in varying metals and qualities. The scheme was an entirely French phenomenon, tolerated by authorities as a marketing exercise.
Berck is known primarily for its hospital heritage — the town developed as a center for treating tuberculosis of the bone in the 19th century, drawing patients from across Europe.
