Obverse description Central field occupied by the quartered royal arms of Spain within a shield, displaying castles (Castile) and lions (León) in alternating quarters, with the escutcheon of the Bourbon dynasty (fleurs-de-lis) at the centre. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown. The mint mark 'M' and assayer initial 'J' appear to the left of the shield. A partially visible circular legend surrounds the design on the irregularly shaped flan, characteristic of cob (macuquina) coinage.
